Campaign For Real Ale

Posted by Sarah, 15-8-2008

I'm not much of a beer connoisseur; in fact I rarely drink beer. However, last weekend I thought it might be fun to check out the beer festival in Earl's Court. The last time I went to a beer festival was in Germany, where these events have the town's attendance and are taken very seriously in a light-hearted way. Picture long wooden benches covered in red checker table clothes, traditional German country music, with a great sense of the community socialising as one. We drank until the early hours...and that's about all I can remember.

Sadly the atmosphere was a little different over here, although I did get to taste some very good beers! My favourites were the sour Belgian beers, even if I did have men passing me dressed in drag and others puking in the corner! In between the fast food stalls there were some great ye old traditional English food. We sampled the pork scratchings, which although very tasty, did cause a concern for my heart.

Eventually we were told to leave the building at 7pm, we made our way out all quite merry and had forgiven the poor atmosphere. I don't think I'm a beer fan yet, but will be keeping an eye out for a quality beer here and there.

I am beginning to understand the drive behind the'Campaign for Real Ale' now, and think we should make a stand against those unsightly cans of Carling and Fosters... C'mon drink responsibly, drink real ale!
